Muse is a new project dreamt up by several professional classically trained vocalists in the Asheville area. Through multidisciplinary and multi-sensory concerts, the art song is brought to life. This Western classical genre spanned a few hundred years, but is now seeing a revival among modern day composers and vocalists, alike. The precursor to the pop song, art songs are elevated forms of music that tend to be inspired by or containing the text of poetry. Performed by a vocalist and pianist, they are intimate both in subject matter and in presentation.
This debut concert will feature two French Impressionist song cycles inspired by Fêtes Galantes, a book of poetry by Paul Verlaine. One by Gabriel Fauré and one by Claude Debussy, sopranos Mandy Vollrath and Alex Nuesse will sing these gorgeous and deeply moving songs. Collaborating with them, you will see the virtuosic piano style of these songs played by Luke Shaver and Peter Kutt. Music will be sung in French with both printed and read translations. Afterwards, we will have a talk back to discuss the history of the music and poetry as well as answer any questions from the audience!
