Join Story Parlor for the second iteration of its summer Story/Arts Residency, welcoming local artist Carolina Quiroga for a month-long exploration of myth and archetype.
For this second night of the 2024 Residency, artist-in-residence Carolina Quiroga will delve into the mythology of fathers and prevailing narratives passed down throughout time. From tales traversing heroic figures, absent gods, and the archetype of the “breadwinner,” the evening will explore and challenge how perspectives of paternal roles have shaped our cultures and family dynamics.
The Mythology of Fathers will feature stories by artist-in-residence, Carolina Quiroga, along with a guest performances by Joe Carroll and Shunyu Huang.
For the second portion of the evening, audience members will be invited to reflect and share in a communal storytelling circle. (Sharing is completely optional!)
We also invite folks to bring food to share that pays homage to their ideas and memories surrounding fatherhood.
This three-part immersive residency will present diverse cultural myths, legends, folktales, and fairytales that have shaped our beliefs, while working to dismantle old narratives to make way for the new. Each evening will feature art and stories that span from the personal to the universal, investigating their influence on the scripts and societal expectations folded into our collective psyche.
Curated performances will be followed by a community circle where guests will be encouraged to contribute their own stories and reflections, and explore ways to break free from unconscious patterns in the quest to re-imagine tales yet to be told.

Carolina, a dynamic bilingual storyteller, has a unique gift for captivating audiences with her enchanting tales from Latin America, spanning from El Río Grande to Patagonia. Since she arrived in the United States, she has graced the stages of renowned events such as the National Storytelling Festival and The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. Her storytelling tours have taken her to schools, libraries, museums, and cultural institutions nationwide, where she shares the vibrant and diverse folklore of Latin America and the Hispanic world.
Carolina is an active member of TAPAS (Teaching Artists Presenting in Asheville Schools), where she continues to inspire and educate through her art. -
Joe Carroll
Joe Carroll has been an improviser and performer since 2007. He has performed at The Dirty South Improv Festival, NC Comedy Arts Festival, Asheville Yes Fest, The Asheville Fringe Festival and Chicago’s Annoyance Theater. As an instructor at the Misfit Improv & Acting school Carroll has also brought countless students to the stage as performers in their own right. He has also taught improv at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts and as part of the Asheville Improv Collective. A member of the comedy duo “Mabel’s Baby,” Carroll also produces a monthly solo show called “Hotdoggin’ With Joe” at the Lazoom Room. -
Story Parlor’s residencies exist to champion the creative work of locally-based artists and art groups hailing from BIPOC, LGTBQIA+, and other historically marginalized communities in the quest to amplify and bridge together the diverse fabric of voices in Asheville.
Specifically, the Story/Arts residency aims to provide a platform that showcases the transformative and healing powers of storytelling through all art mediums, while tending to the core values of Story Parlor’s mission, which include:
• Connecting audiences and artists from varying creative backgrounds and interests
• Informing, inspiring, and invigorating through the arts
• Promoting and fostering self-inquiry and mindfulness
• Cultivating creative exchange and cultural insight
• Fostering authenticity and inclusiveness
In addition to public performances and/or workshops, artists-in-residence receive dedicated rehearsal time in the space; an artist stipend; creativity coaching sessions; marketing and promotion; and more.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with preference given to applicants who cross disciplines, embrace collaboration, and present a residency proposal that embodies the core elements of storytelling through all art forms. More info can be found here.
