The Art of Performance Poetry is an engaging spoken word poetry workshop teaching the deeper skills of poetry performed on the stage. This workshop includes tools for any poet who is considering taking poetry from the page to the stage, while also clearly outlining the differences between page poetry and stage poetry.

    • Poets who are beginning to frequent open mics and poetry readings

    • Poets who are pursuing poetry or spoken word as a career

    • Poets who want to enter and eventually win poetry slams

    • Poets who want to get better at their craft year after year, month after month

    Please plan to bring 1-2 poems to the workshop.

  • Christopher D. Sims aka UniverSouLove has been teaching writing and performance poetry workshops for better than twenty years. Starting off as an open mic host for the Rockford Public Library in 1998, he has gone on to educate youth and adults in places such as Spectrum Progressive School of Rockford (2004-2014), Auburn High School (Rockford, IL), Emmanual Lutheran Church (Rockford, IL), Beloit Public Library (Beloit, WI), Womanspace, Rockford, IL (Social Justice Spoken Word Poetry Workshop), and most recently, Christopher will be leading an online presentation and workshop with the Carl Sandburg Home Historical Site. Christopher D. Sims is a poetry slam winner have won three in the northern Illinois area. He is an author as well with several books to his credit, including 2011's Universal Citizen which broke ground in poetry related to community organizing and political activism. He is co-founder of Black Poet Matters: A Poetic Soundtrack For The Times alongside Brooklyn, NY deejay Benyamin B.
