Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words, rhythm, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely, your world.

"Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket." -Charles Simic

Have you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper?

Poetry is undoubtedly a practice, but it doesn't have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only "ask" is to take note and notice of your life

We'll help develop the work itself, together.

This full-bodied beginner's poetry class will help you shift from "Oof, I could never..." into "Wait, where's my journal?!" by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass, to coffee-shop conversation, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner's voice whispering "I love you" at 4am, this class is for you. We'll weave together elements and forms of poetry, guided discussion, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation and skill-building. It's the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner.

"Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance." -Carl Sandburg

  • This class is for you if:

You have a voice inside of you yearning for exploration, expression, and space to be heard.

You take notice of life, have a keen eye for observation, and are ready to put that down on paper.

You love language and are ready to play! wiggle! dance! with you written words!

You have a tendency to get in your own, creative way through perfectionism, self-criticism, or self-doubt.

You write a little bit here...and there, eh...maybe once a little in college...have always had an urge to write, but...ok, let's confess: you want to remember that wonderful, writerly part of yourself!

You thrive in compassionate, community spaces with creative accountability.

  • Session 1: On Paying Attention: Exploring the Senses

Session 2: Form, Function, and Burning Down the House

Session 3: Writing the Red Wheelbarrow: Images and Impact

Session 4: Tip of the Tongue Teeth and the Lips: Sound, Rhythm, and Tone

Session 5: "Bringing the Shovel Down": Student Showcase

While these classes explore the tangible elements of poetry, each class prioritizes your voice and personal exploration process over staying inside the lines. Classes read like a choir of angels behind ya, shouting, "Go, go, go!"

  • "Dear Tikva, once again, you have created a space of sweetness and inspiration, helping me to peel off some layers and reveal myself. I'm so grateful. Thank you!" - Sarah S.

"What a joy to be guided by Tikva in a creative practice of trusting the unknown and experimenting with art-making from a place of play. Tikva energizes a room with her attitude of openness and acceptance and supports discovery through her gentle invitation to allow imagination to flow freely. " - Natalie C.

"Tikva, In everything you present and even the words that come out of your mouth there is an intensely playful creativity that I find to be absolutely delightful! I still have the "Spilled Tea" exercise in my Trapper Keeper and it reminds me to keep play and serendipity a part of my own creative practice. Thank you for the beautiful reminder that what we are looking for can come to us in many lovely forms!" - Torin K.
